Have a (Healthy) Heart

August 2013

I recently had a major life event. Three years ago I changed doctors because I didn’t feel where I was going would give me the medical care I would need in case of a major health issue. The first thing the new doctor did was a physical.

He asked me, “How did your father die?”

“Heart attack,” I responded.

“Okay, let’s go and get yours scanned for a base line.” Well, the results weren’t that good and I was sent to a cardiologist. We monitored the situation with tests for two more years and when the arterial flows slowed down we scheduled the operation.

My double bypass surgery took place in early May and after three months of recuperating I am back to work and feeling well. I am very lucky.

One of our superintendents recently had an angioplasty to place two heart stents after an arterial blockage was detected. Last week the project manager working with him came in and showed me the superintendent’s angiogram prior to surgery. Having a lot of recent experience reading angiograms I could only ask, “How in the world did he make it to the hospital?!” The blockage was so acute anyone could see that on the screening.

He didn’t even know he had a problem. The majority of people don’t. Our problems started way back in our early childhood with all the cheeseburgers and French fries we ate. What is most important for men and women now is getting tested for heart disease. You would be amazed at the number of stents they do per day, just at Florida Hospital alone. President Bush just had one done and he has a very rigid exercise program every day.

So, don’t think you are immune because you quit smoking, walked around the block last week and feel great. This is a silent killer.
